Pennsylvania truck accident dumps heavy scrap metal on small car

When driving down the highway, do you ever speed up to pass a semi or other large vehicle? Many people do, and with good reason. Driving behind a big rig can be dangerous, especially if the load being carried isn't well secured.

A recent Pennsylvania truck accident shows just how dangerous unsecured cargo can be. Earlier this week, an open-top semi carrying scrap metal partially tipped onto its side, dropping a heavy engine on top of a sedan. The woman in the smaller vehicle was seriously injured.

According to news reports, the spill occurred in Montgomery County as the semi tried to navigate the ramp from Interstate 76 onto Route 202. As the tractor-trailer partially tipped and began to spill, an engine was among the pieces of scrap metal to fall out. It landed on a Toyota Corolla with a 46-year-old woman inside.

The woman was eventually rescued and transported to a nearby trauma center with serious injuries. Before she could be removed from her vehicle, however, the engine had to be lifted off her car using a tow-truck crane.

This accident - which nearly killed one driver and backed up highway traffic for hours - did not need to happen. The exact cause of the incident has not been released, but similar spills have often been the result of driver or company negligence. In some cases, the truck driver attempts to make tight turns too quickly. Other times, the company responsible for shipping the load does not secure it properly or over-fills the truck.

Commercial truckers and the companies they work for have a serious responsibility to protect the safety of other motorists on the road. When trailers are loaded improperly, vehicles are inadequately maintained or truckers drive carelessly, any of these factors is an accident waiting to happen.
