Sleepy drivers place Pennsylvania motorists at serious risk

According to experts at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, being fatigued is a big factor in deadly auto collisions. The CDC estimates that approximately one quarter of all fatal traffic collisions are related to sleepy drivers, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes that at least 2 percent of accidents that don't end up causing fatalities are tied to tiredness.

Male hypothyroidism in Pennsylvania

Low thyroid, or hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland fails to release sufficient amounts of the hormones T3 and T4 into the circulatory system. The condition usually affects women in Pennsylvania and around the country and creates symptoms that include weight gain, depression and fatigue. When men develop the disease, it often goes unrecognized, and their symptoms are attributed to other factors or illnesses.

Contracting diseases at U.S. hospitals

Patients in hospitals in Pennsylvania and around the country are at risk of getting sicker as a result of their stays. Consumer Reports recently reviewed 3,000 hospitals around the country in an attempt to review how well each health care facility reduces the risks of patients contracting deadly infections while under their care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims that, each year, about 75,000 patients die from infections contracted while in a hospital, and nearly 650,000 develop one or more.

Recorded surgeries in Pennsylvania

A new trend that may develop in Pennsylvania surgical suites could allow medical teams and other interested parties to better pinpoint errors that occur during operative procedures. At least two states are considering giving patients the option of having their surgeries recorded which may help investigators isolate instances of malpractice. The actions of the various members of an operative team including surgeons, operative technicians, circulating nurses and anesthesiologists may be able to be monitored while the patient is under anesthesia.
