CDC issues new guidelines for opioid prescriptions

Many patients in Pennsylvania are prescribed opioids to treat acute or chronic pain. While opioid medication can help many patients to deal with pain after accidents or surgery, opioids can be highly addictive, especially when they are prescribed for long-term use. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a set of guidelines for physicians who prescribe opioids to patients.

Automaker recalls could exonerate convicted drivers

In 2010, an 18-year-old Pennsylvania woman pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for losing control of her Chevrolet Cobalt, causing a crash that killed her 16-year-old friend. However, in August, a judge tossed out her guilty plea due to "newly discovered evidence" that the accident may have actually been caused by a defective ignition switch in her vehicle, which was recalled by General Motors in February 2014.

Avoiding motorcycle crash scenarios in Pennsylvania

A motorcycle accident can be a serious event that causes significant injury or death to riders and their passengers. However, there are many tactics that riders can use to reduce or eliminate the odds of being involved in a motorcycle accident. Those who are new to riding a motorcycle should complete a basic safety course to make them more aware of potential dangers and how to avoid them.

Physician fatigue and surgical errors in Pennsylvania

A recent study led by a researcher at the University of Toronto indicates that just because a doctor worked the previous night, it does not mean that the physician is more likely to make a surgical error. The study was published in the The New England Journal of Medicine, and it involved almost 39,000 cases and just shy of 1,500 surgeons over a five-year period.
