When they are out on the road, Pennsylvania motorists must be aware of large trucks. While these trucks are performing the vital service of transferring goods across the country and most drivers operate their vehicles safely and within the confines of the law, there is a constant risk of a truck accident. Smaller vehicles and their occupants can be severely injured and killed in a crash with a truck. Those who have been involved in a trucking accident should know what to do to protect their rights after it has happened. This is particularly true if it is a hit-and-run.
Two people suffered injuries recently when their car was hit by a truck. The truck fled the scene after the crash and the driver was later arrested. The police investigation commenced when a trooper responded to an accident at around 8 p.m. The vehicle had been hit in the back and went through a fence before stopping on an embankment next to the road. According to the female driver, she said that she was in the right lane when a truck advanced upon them from behind her at high speed. She tried to go faster, but was hit by the truck. She lost control, ran across two lanes and went through the fence. The truck did not stop. Her husband was a passenger in the vehicle and they suffered injuries that were initially reported as minor.
The officer followed fluid that was on the road to an exit. After checking several parking areas where trucks were stopped, he found one from out-of-state that had damage to its front. The driver was in the sleeper berth. After speaking to the 56-year-old driver, the trooper discerned that this was the vehicle involved in the accident. The man was arrested for hit-and-run, causing an accident with personal injury and other offenses.
Any accident can lead to serious injuries and even death. Although the people who were hit by the truck are said to have injuries that are minor, that does not eliminate the medical expenses they will face and the possibility that other injuries will arise well afterwards. An accident with a truck can cause those who are injured to need a hospital stay, rehabilitation, surgical procedures and miss time at work. They might have permanent damage. Regardless of the initial assessment of the accident, those who are involved need to speak to an attorney who is experienced with truck crashes to consider a lawsuit to receive compensation.
